During the holiday season and after the new year, there is a lot of family travel, especially now after so many Covid restrictions have been lifted. Along with that comes busy highways and long-distance travel. Here are a few tips to help you and your loved ones stay safe during your travels in 2023.

10 tips for safe family travel in 2023:

  1. Always carry a medical emergency kit as well as everything you would need for breaking down on the highway (flashlight, tire jack, flares, spare key and phone charger).
  2. Join a road assistance program like AAA, in case of a breakdown.
  3. Before taking your trip, inspect your vehicle. Check the tire treads, tire pressure, oil and coolant levels. Also, be sure to clean your windows for maximum visibility.
  4. Know where you are going and plan your trip. Use updated road maps, instead of totally relying on your GPS. Sometimes GPS systems do not display the most recent information.
  5. Get a good night’s sleep before starting on your road trip. This will ensure that you are alert for driving.
  6. Take a break from driving. Experts say that a 15-minute driving break every two hours is important to maintain alertness and stretch out your body to prevent pain and fatigue.
  7. Share the driving time. If possible, share the driving time with a family member or friend to give yourself a break.
  8. Eat before you start your trip, but eat lightly. Heavy meals can make you feel tired and sluggish. Bottled water and light snacks on the road should help sustain you until you reach your destination, where there will likely be plenty of food!
  9. Check the weather as you travel so that you can be aware of what road conditions lay ahead.
  10. Drive Safely! Don’t speed, drive defensively, don’t follow too closely, don’t weave in and out of traffic, share the road, obey the law, don’t drink and drive, don’t exhibit road rage, be aware of big rigs and don’t pass them on the right.

Following these 10 tips for safe family travel can help ensure that you get to your destination and back home with incident.
